Ayres Jewelry Thrives for Three Generations You've heard a hundred times: "independent jewelers are a dying breed". Well, don't believe everything you hear. There's a third generation jeweler in Casper, Wyoming who's been around for ninety years and still going strong. As Wyoming's oldest continuously run jewelry store, Ayres Jewelry has flourished and adapted through many difficult times only to prove that independents are here to stay With so much history attached to the store, Ayres Jewelry just seems special from the moment you walk in the door. Scott Ayres the grandson of Claude Ayres, founder of the company and his wife Margaret Johnson Ayres are usually behind the counter. Their easy going mannerisms impress customers as they browse the enormous gemstone and diamond and jewelry selections in the show room. Although every Ayres piece is heirloom quality, custom design is Margaret's specialty. Having owned her own Billings Montana jewelry company prior to marrying Scott, Margaret has been winning design awards since the early 90s for her works of art. "Margaret can custom design anything" Scott proudly states. "She's a big and a talent and has won awards with several of the jewelry associations and she has been on the board of several industry associations." But Margaret's approach to designing is a little different than most. When she sits down with a client the questions start. "Every custom piece starts with discovery ." Scott explains. "She wants to know a lot about the person who'll wear the piece including what their lifestyle is like and what clothing will be worn with the piece and what their interests are. She'll even give them homework asking them to pull pictures out of magazines whether clothing or jewelry". This discovery process helps Margaret create a piece unique to that individual that expresses his or her essential nature. she wants the wearer to love these articles of beauty and to fall in love again with the givers when they wear the piece. "Margaret is a very creative sharing and giving woman. She's a Montana girl who is actively involved in the jewelry industry". The town of Casper agrees with Scott. Last year they recognized Margaret's volunteer service by awarding her a Woman of Distinction in her community. With a long volunteer that includes not only a local self help facility but a long history serving with her local CASA organization, Margaret stays busy. And so does Scott. Running the oldest jewelry store in Wyoming is not easy. Keeping up with a customer list of more than ten thousand names is tough, not to mention gauging the needs and tastes of the Casper community. One valuable lesson that Scott and Margaret have learned over the years is that trends don't necessarily catch on as fast as the rest of the county. Be sure to email Scott and Margaret and gemdude@ayresjewelery.com. or check out their web site to catch a glimpse of and outstanding amethyst and diamond piece Margaret created at www.ayresjewelry.com. |
